Throughout the City, the department maintains over 1,800 sewer manholes and approximately 4,000 inlet and catch basins. The sewer system maintenance repair and response play an essential role in maximizing the amount of wastewater flow that is conveyed throughout the system, especially during rain events. The schedule for maintaining the sewer system includes the cleaning of combined / sanitary sewer lines and televising combined sewerlines as well as areas within the system that have potential damage or obstructions. Additionally, the cleaning of catch basins and inlet covers aids in the removal of grit and debris that could potentially reach the Valparaiso Wastewater Treatment plant and prevent further obstructions within the system. Maintenance of the sewer system includes all storm water related sewer infrastructure within the City of Valparaiso. Approximately 30% of the sewer department's budget is allocated to storm water maintenance and repair. Sewer department employees are on-call 24-hours a day to respond to plugged sewer mains, basement backups, sewer gas odors, and emergency repairs. The Sewer Department also maintains city ditches and retention ponds by cutting away grass and weed growth as well as the removal of materials such as tires, lumber, grass clippings, brush, wood pallets, roofing materials, broken cement and various other items. Locates of city mains and inspections of new and repaired service lines are also done by the Sewer Department.
