Hydrant Flushing Program
July 26, 2010: The Valparaiso City Utilities will be flushing in the following areas: Glendale Blvd to Evans Avenue and from Valparaiso Street to Campbell Street.
The
Valparaiso City Utilities implemented a Unidirectional
Water Main Flushing Program for the City's Water Distribution System
starting in 2008. The goals and objectives
for this program were to improve overall water quality and distribution
system flows while at the same time reduce the amount of water
used for flushing compared to our previous flushing programs. This
was accomplished by City water department crews flushing water
mains in a sequential operation starting at the water treatment
plants and then moving into the distribution system and working
to cover all areas served by the water utility.
As a result, the utility was able to flush all but 34 miles of main in 2008, mostly due to weather conditions. The crew completed 166 miles of main and used 29,537,585 gallons of water to scour the water mains. During the project, there was minimal property damage and customer complaints.
The project will ultimately save money and water usage in the future and allow the utilitiy to finally have real numbers of how much water is used for flushing. Thanks to the distribution and customer service departments for making this project a success.
